Look up Harker Heights in NOAA's storm database by place name and you will find nothing. Read the narratives filed under nearby locations and the city turns up again and again. The hail is real, it is usually moderate, and it lands on a housing stock where thousands of homes date from the 1970s and 1980s. We are a woman-owned roofing company with project managers assigned to Central Texas, and we start every Harker Heights job by sorting storm damage from plain age, because that decides whether you need a repair, a new roof or a claim.

Before we talk about repairing or replacing anything, we work out what the roof has actually been through. Three things shape that answer.
A 1979 house and a 2015 house can sit on the same street in Harker Heights and need very different things. We look at how the shingles have aged across the whole roof, not just where the last storm hit, because age and hail call for different decisions and different conversations with an insurer.
Moderate hail often dents soft metal before it visibly harms shingles. Gutter tops, downspouts, vent caps and flashing tell us the size of the hail your house took, and we photograph them alongside the roof. When the gutters themselves are dented or pulling loose, we can fix or replace them in the same job.
If the photos show storm damage, we support your insurance restoration claim with documentation. If they show wear, we tell you so, because most homeowner policies do not cover wear and tear, and a claim for it is likely to be denied. Worn roofs can still often be repaired for a while, and we will say when that is the case.
Reach us at (214) 766-3669 or through the form. Tell us roughly when the house was built and when the roof was last replaced, if you know.
We come to your Harker Heights home, inspect the roof, photograph what we find and give you a written estimate with our recommendation: repair, replace or leave it alone.
If you go ahead, your project manager confirms the material, books the crew, keeps you updated and walks the finished roof with you.
Harker Heights is older than its median suggests. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 puts the median year built at 2001, but it also counts 2,359 homes built in the 1970s and 2,141 in the 1980s, about 4,500 houses that are now 35 to 55 years old (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS table B25034). Another 3,548 went up from 2000 to 2009 and 2,993 from 2010 to 2019.
Most homes are owner-occupied: 7,699 of 12,469 occupied homes, about 62 percent (ACS table B25003). The median owner-occupied home is valued at $287,800 (ACS table B25077), so a new roof is a big share of a family's home budget, and the repair or replace question matters. Detached houses account for 8,842 homes, with another 1,089 mobile homes, 918 homes in buildings of five or more units and a mix of duplexes and fourplexes (ACS table B25024).
The storms that touch Harker Heights rarely touch it alone. On March 28, 2014, the day NOAA's narratives record ping pong ball hail in Harker Heights, softball-size hail blew out windows in houses in Belton's Dawson Ranch subdivision, and we take on roofing work in Belton, where softball hail broke windows. Half dollar hail was reported within Killeen's city limits in November 2022, a few weeks after the half dollar hail in Harker Heights, and our crews look after Killeen roofs next door. On May 22, 2024, NOAA logged an EF2 tornado that tore roofs in the Terrace at Lake Pointe subdivision near W Adams Ave, filed under the Temple airport location, and we handle wind-damaged roofs in Temple as well.

From residential and commercial roof replacement to urgent emergency roof repairs, our 5-star service speaks for itself.
Bell County's hail season peaks in April and May. A free assessment with photos now gives you a clean record before the next one starts, and catches small repairs while they are still small.
Central Texas sees its share of contractors who arrive after a hailstorm and leave when the claims dry up. When a leak shows up two winters later, there is nobody to call. We would rather be the company that is still answering.
SunTex has been in business since 2022 and is 100% woman-owned. Our office is at 12800 Westridge Blvd, Suite 162, Frisco, the address on our Google listing, and our Central Texas project managers, Travis and Alison Gardenhire, are named on our About page with the rest of the team. You know who will run your job before you sign.
We also tell people no. If your Harker Heights roof has years left in it, or a repair will solve the problem, that is what we recommend, with photos to show why.
NOAA's Storm Events Database, the federal record of severe weather reports, files each report under the nearest named location (NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database). None of the Bell County reports from 2010 to mid-2026 is filed under Harker Heights. Most of the ones that name the city sit under the Killeen Municipal Airport location point, and their narratives say where the hail fell:
Across Bell County as a whole, NOAA logs 172 hail reports in that period, 134 of them an inch or larger, spread over 49 separate storm days. So the honest summary is this: Harker Heights gets hail, the reports that name it are mostly one to one and a half inches, and the county around it has seen far bigger. Checking every Bell County report's coordinates against the Census Bureau's city boundary places 13 reports inside the city limits, including a 75 mph gust in May 2025, and they make up the dated hail and wind record for Harker Heights roofs.
Harker Heights homeowners tend to come to us with a budget question as much as a roof question. With a median home value under $300,000, a new roof is a big outlay, and nobody wants to pay for one a year or two early.
So we hear three questions most. Is the damage from a storm or from age? Will insurance pay, given how old the roof is? And can a repair buy a few more years? We answer each with photos from your roof, not with a sales script, and we put the reasoning in writing so you can compare it with any other estimate.
Timing is the other part of the decision. Replacing a roof on your own schedule, before it fails, lets you choose the material and the date. Waiting until a leak forces the issue often means paying for interior repairs as well, in the middle of storm season, when roofers are busiest.
The hail reports that name Harker Heights cluster between quarter size (1.00 inch in NOAA's records) and ping pong ball size (1.50 inches). On a new roof, hail that size may do little, and what it does is often repair work. On an aging roof, it can be the push that finishes it.
Here is why. As asphalt shingles age, they lose granules, dry out and turn brittle. A one-inch stone that would bounce off a young shingle can crack an old one or knock loose the granules that are left. The damage looks like scattered dark spots, cracked tabs and fresh granules in the gutters. Underneath, the mat is exposed to sun and water, and leaks follow.
Wind adds its own wear. The July 2021 storm that broke power poles in Harker Heights is the kind of wind that lifts shingles, breaks their seal strips and peels back ridge caps. On an older roof, the sealant has often weakened already, so tabs lift more easily and creased shingles tear free in the next storm.
The result in Harker Heights is often mixed damage: some from hail, some from wind, much of it sitting on top of normal age. Sorting those apart matters, because it decides whether insurance is involved at all, and whether a repair is worth the money. When the trouble is a split vent boot or a strip of wind-lifted tabs, fixing the leak and the lifted shingles on a Harker Heights roof stops the water without touching the sound slopes.
Three decisions set the size and cost of the job, and we work through them with you at the assessment.
If damage is limited to a few shingles, one flashing or one pipe boot, a repair can buy time. If the shingles are brittle across every slope, patches will not match and will not last, and a new roof is the better spend. We show you which case you are in with photos from each slope.
Hail that dents a roof's metal often dents the gutters too, and old gutters can pull away from fascia that has seen decades of runoff. If yours need attention, it is usually simplest to settle that plan alongside the roof, and our crews take on gutter repair, replacement and new gutter installs for Harker Heights homes too.
Asphalt shingles are the usual choice and the lowest cost. Designer shingles give older homes a heavier, dimensional look. Tile suits Mediterranean and Spanish elevations, and standing seam metal works on modern designs and porch roofs. We match the material to the house and the budget, and we do not push the most expensive option when the standard one fits. The 2000s were the city's biggest building decade, and on those houses a first reroof down to the deck in Harker Heights is also the moment an impact-rated shingle can go on.
Bell County's hail runs on a spring calendar. Of the 134 reports of hail an inch or larger since 2010, 59 came in April and 36 in May, and those two months account for 36 of the 49 storm days. March, June, October and November make up the rest, apart from a single September day. The Harker Heights narratives fit that pattern, with reports in March, April and May, plus one in October 2022 that shows fall storms happen here too.
About 4,500 Harker Heights homes date from the 1970s and 1980s. If those houses have been reroofed since they were built, the question is when. A roof put on in the 1990s or early 2000s is now well into its life, and it has been through every storm on the list above. On these homes we also look closely at decking, flashing and ventilation, since older framing and earlier repairs can hide problems that only show at tear-off.
Roof age changes what insurance pays. The Texas Department of Insurance explains that a replacement cost policy pays to repair or replace at current prices, while an actual cash value policy pays replacement cost minus depreciation, the loss of value from wear and age (Texas Department of Insurance homeowners guide). On an older Harker Heights roof, that depreciation can be large, so check your declarations page before a storm, not after. The same guide notes that some policies set a one-year deadline to file a claim, and that most policies do not cover wear and tear.
Whatever your policy pays, the deductible is your share. Texas law makes it an offense for a contractor paid from insurance proceeds to waive, absorb or rebate your deductible without the insurer's consent, and requires contracts of $1,000 or more paid from a claim to print a notice saying so in bold type (Texas Business and Commerce Code §27.02). A roofer who offers to "eat" your deductible is offering to break that law.
Hail is not Bell County's only roof threat. NOAA logs 95 thunderstorm wind reports and 9 tornadoes in the county between 2010 and mid-2026. The strongest gust, 87 knots on May 22, 2024, destroyed a metal building near I-35 and Loop 363, on the same day an EF2 tornado damaged roofs in Temple's Terrace at Lake Pointe subdivision. Harker Heights' own wind report, from July 2021, broke power poles. After any storm with damaging wind, check for missing tabs, shingles in the yard and lifted ridge caps from the ground, and call us for a closer look; a few lifted tabs caught early are a repair, not a re-roof.
Harker Heights has more small rental buildings than its single-family streets suggest. The Census counts 835 homes in two-unit buildings and 1,123 in buildings of three or four units, and 4,770 occupied homes in the city are rented. Owners of those properties face the same storms with an extra layer of logistics: tenants to notify, access to arrange, and often an owner who lives somewhere else.
We roof residential, commercial and multi-family properties, and a duplex or fourplex gets the same process as a house. The owner gets the photos and the written estimate, one project manager handles scheduling, and the documentation stays on file for the owner's insurer.
You do not need a ladder to get a first read on a Harker Heights roof after hail or high wind. Walk the yard and look for shingle pieces or granules washed out of the downspouts. Check the tops of the gutters and any outdoor AC unit for fresh dents. Look up at the ridge line for caps that sit crooked, and along the eaves for tabs that lift in a breeze. Inside, check the ceilings under valleys and around chimneys, and the attic decking if you can reach it safely.
If you find any of those, write down the storm date and call us for an assessment. Stay off the roof itself; older shingles break under foot, and a fall from a roof is a far worse problem than a leak.
After a repair or a new roof, the SunTex Roof Care Program keeps it on a schedule. Members get two inspections a year with a written roof health report and photos, sealant touch-ups, priority scheduling after severe weather, a complimentary emergency tarp when needed, and preferred pricing on repairs. For a Harker Heights home in a county with 49 big-hail days in about 16 years, that steady record of the roof is the best evidence you can bring to the next claim.
Each job follows the same sequence, whether it is a repair or a full re-roof, so you always know what comes next.
We ask when the house was built, when the roof was last replaced, and which storms you remember. If a claim is open, we ask where it stands.
We inspect every slope, photograph the damage and the wear, and give you a written estimate. You will know whether we see storm damage, age, or both, and what we would do in your place.
Your project manager books the crew and keeps you posted. A repair replaces the damaged shingles, flashing or boots and seals them. A re-roof takes the old roof off to the deck, replaces damaged decking, and puts on new underlayment, flashing and roofing. We finish by walking the roof with you.
Before: an aging Harker Heights roof often shows curled tab edges, bare patches where granules have washed off, a few cracked shingles from the last hailstorm, and stains on the ceiling near a valley or chimney.
During: once the old layers are off, the deck shows its condition. On older homes, this is where soft boards, earlier patch jobs and tired flashing come to light, and they are fixed before anything new goes down. On a repair, the same check happens around the opened area.
After: the roof is the material and color you chose, with new underlayment, flashing and ridge components where the work called for them. If the gutters were part of the plan, they are sorted at the same time, so water leaves the roof the way it should.
You also have a record of the job: photos of the old roof, the damage and the decisions made along the way. If you join the Roof Care Program, every inspection adds to it, which is exactly what an adjuster asks for after the next Bell County storm.
Whether a storm just passed, a ceiling stain appeared, or your roof is simply old, the first step is the same: a free assessment and an honest answer on repair or replacement.

Harker Heights roofing contractor questions
Yes. NOAA files reports under the nearest named location, usually the Killeen Municipal Airport point for this area, but the narratives describe hail in Harker Heights in 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2024, from quarter size to ping pong ball size. Storms nobody reported would not appear at all, so the real count is higher.
From 2010 to mid-2026, NOAA logs 172 hail reports in Bell County, 134 of them an inch or larger, over 49 storm days, plus 95 thunderstorm wind reports and 9 tornadoes. Most big hail comes in April and May. The largest stone in the county record, 5.68 inches, fell in Salado on April 12, 2022.
It depends on when the roof itself was last replaced, not when the house was built. A roof put on in the 1990s or early 2000s is likely near the end of its life; one replaced after a recent storm may have years left. A free assessment tells you which, with photos.
Insurance pays for covered storm damage, not for age. If hail or wind damaged the roof, your policy decides how much: a replacement cost policy pays at current prices, while an actual cash value policy subtracts depreciation for wear and age. Our photos help show what the storm did. You pay your deductible either way.
Alex Keller manages our sales in Central Texas and Austin, and Travis Gardenhire and Alison Gardenhire are our Central Texas project managers. Your project manager is your contact from the approved estimate to the final walkthrough.
Repair when the damage is local and the rest of the roof is sound. Replace when the shingles are brittle or damaged across the whole roof, when leaks keep moving, or when an insurer approves a replacement after a storm. We tell you which side your roof is on, and when a repair will do, that is what we recommend.
